Discover 10 Most Common Mistakes When Implementing a Quality Management System
There are many reasons why business owners implement a quality management system.
However, there are mistakes made in the implementation that may result in the process not yielding the desired benefits.
Ten of the most common mistakes made when implementing a quality management system are:
1. Undertaking the process for the wrong reason. Occasionally business owners have visions of grandeur derived from potentially:
- receiving the ‘gong’
- displaying the certificate
- attending the awards ceremony
rather than focusing on the long term benefits to their business.
2. Total senior management commitment to the process is missing
3. Dedicating insufficient resource to the process
4. Failing to accept the change is an on-going process not a project with an end date
5. Setting unrealistic target dates
6. Failing to implement the quality management system throughout the organization, instead
believing it is only applicable to the operational functions such as manufacturing
7. Failing to adequately train staff in how to implement change
8. Documenting the quality management system before it has been properly designed
9. Believing the implementation is to document procedures rather than to generate improved results
10. Implementing the quality management system before robust checks and updates, if required, have been carried out
